I suspect that for dogs and cats the steroid use is similar, but ferrets are very resistant to the negative side effects of steroids, something which was discovered over time and many cases. It's one of the benefits of having a couple of decades of ferrets as a not terribly uncommon treated pet species. That is why there is more willingness to use them in ferrets. There are, of course, still individuals for whom they are avoided due to specific health problems (heart problems, ulcers, etc.) and the like, but it is amazing how incredibly well they typically do with steroids, either long term or in high doses, without problems.
