You might try removing the cage, if it's not too
large, and sraying the area with diluted Hydrogen
Pyroxide and water. If there is anything the ants are
feeding on, it should die. This *should*, in theory,
also destroy their scent trails.
The good thing about using peroxide is that if you
spray in the morning, you should be able to put your
fuzzies back in there by dinner-time, because hydrogen
peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water. This is
also good if you have a moldy spot and cannot scrub it
(delicate things, basement, etc)

I won't promise it will work, but it's something cheap
to try.
Also, don't make the peroxide mixture too strong, it
can bleach cloth.
