I had written in about an eight week old ferret having an unusually
bloated belly. He is going to the vet with a stool sample to test to make
sure there is no organism present causing this. He still is acts perfectly
healthy! Just wonderful stools and all. His stomack went down in two days.
Let me explain... its still big, but not what I'd call bloated now. We have
a theory of what has happened, and I just wanted to share in case others have
been through this, or do go through it.
Blacky, was kept in a small wire cage, and is at least 8 weeks old,
maybe older. He was alone in this locked cage and very bored. When we
brought him home, I noticed he wouldn't stop eating. The whole family began
to work on excercizing him as he seemed to have low muscle tone. Also, we
didn't lock him in a cage anymore except at night. In addition we fed him
three meals a day instead of letting him free range. By the third day, we
could keep the food in there as he wasn't eating all day gorging himself
anymore. I really think this animal may have been eating out of boredom?
And now he isn't bored. It may be possibly that the petstore did'nt feed him
for a day or so, and then fed him the day I came in, so he gorged his belley
really bad, but I doubt that. They've always been great about cleaning,
feeding, water, etc... plus the little guy is fat.
I will update you all on Blacky as soon as he is seen by a vet. And
I'll let you know if his stomack has continued to go down to normal with the
excercise and stimulation. :)
