I read that ants hate vinegar, so I tried it on an ant infestation at my Dad's house. It works for a limited time, but it does work.
Try washing the area with straight vinegar and let it dry. If it's on a carpet, put the vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the carpet. You have to repeat this every few days, but it seems to work. Use either yellow or white vinegar. Your home will smell like a ferret's pickle factory for awhile, but at least it's non-toxic. (washing up with vinegar keeps dogs from returning to "pee"spots, too. Works for me.)
The only other thing I can suggest is to make a "Moat" for your ferret cage ... get something about 2" larger than your cage on all sides and about 1"-2" deep (total 4" wider & 4" longer than the cage) and put in about 1"-2" of plain water. Make sure there isn't anything to bridge the water (open cage door, blanket, etc) for the ants to climb on. Ants can't swim (I've been told) and so can't get to anything with a "moat" of water around and under it.
PITA,(pain in the *ankles*) but it works.
