I have seen this several times before. It was because the ferret wasn't feeling well. Every ferret that displayed this behavior developed lymphoma.

In fact, I took in a foster recently that paced and dug at the front of the cage. We got the results back today from his recent surgery. Endrocrine carcinoma. :(

I moved the ferret to an area where they wouldn't be prone to be so anxious such as free-roaming in a room with barriers at the door (not with the door shut as that upsets them).
