Ellie May along with her boyfriend Jabber Jaws are 2 ferrets that were dropped off on me a few months back. I first saw these guys in September of 2002 at an exotic pet auction. They were 6 months old then. The man that bought them thought he could make a quick buck on them and 2 months later when he couldn't, they showed up on my doorstep.
I got them at close to 8 months, and within the month had them fixed but not descented. At that time Ellie's glucose was 89.
We monitored her for 2 months to see what was going to happen and it dropped down to 75 and the staring into space started. We put her on pred and she was doing pretty well but had to up it just a bit yesterday.
She is now a year and 2 months. I have had 26 ferrets in the past 10 years with 17 of them with us now. I have never had one with insulinoma at such a young age. How common is this and long term healthwise, what can I expect with her?
Tazzie started his insulinoma at about a year and a half to 2 years of age. Most of you know his story about how he was paralyzed from the insulinoma and lymph and had to have a Tazzie Mobile made for him. He passed at 3.
Maybe I just answered my own question. I wasn't thinking about Tazzie when I started writing this.
Still I'd like to know how common it is for a ferret that young to get insulinoma. I know it used to be fairly rare but times are changing.
Thank you in advance.
