Hi all and Dr. Ruth,
I just read what you described in your post and it sounds exactly what Holly has. I took Holly to another vet and he checked her temperature again using a glass thermometer. The temp went up as high as the thermometer could display and the vet said it had to be over 106+. He immediately gave her fluids sub q again. He started her on Baytril and did a chem screen (he said he couldn't get enough for a cbc but would try today). He called last night and said her temp went down to 106. Her glucose was good (130) and the bloodwork just showed that she was dehydrated.
I went there today and they said her fever was still the same, the antibiotics never touched the temp so far. They took some fluid (there was very little in the lump)for a cytology screen but they got some to use. Then they did x-rays and they looked clear. They also couldn't get enough urine for a test but they said there was enough for a test stick and the urine showed blood in it (I don't know if this is a part of the problem or could her kidneys be getting affected from being dehydrated and trying to process the medicine?). When I saw her, she was so lethargic and had stopped eating and drinking on her own, they had to feed her. The vet said they would give her cool compresses to try and bring down the temp and was also going to add clavamox to the antibiotics.
The vet said she was in grave condition and we might lose her and I believe that completely from how she looked. I don't know now if she makes it through to tomorrow, should I stop having them do these procedures? I don't want to keep her in pain. I'm still holding out hope that tomorrow she will be better but she sounds exactly like the ferret Dr. Ruth mentioned about in her posting. It sounds like lymphoma to me too. I can't believe this has all happened so quickly. Last Saturday she was fine and tonight she looked so ill and close to death. Thank you for the postings and emails, I was happy to find this site that has people who know about illnesses that come up like this. I'll keep this site updated. Take care, Margaret
