In 21 years we've run into only one case here in which a ferret was in serious danger from another. The one in danger had very bad deformities and other limitations and the other was an alpha who seemed to want to "cull" her by going for the underside of her throat. We were never able to incorporate that deformed ferret into the group.
Your's sounds different -- like maybe it was a tragic accident. Such a sad occurrence.
On the flip side I've heard of a ferret trying to drag a ferret injured in a fall to a human.
