Hi, everyone,
Five of my ferrets went in for various vaccinations and checkups
yesterday. (Our vet does distemper and rabies two weeks apart, BTW.)
We had two unexpected reactions, though both were relatively mild.
Lady Ayeka became only the second ferret my vet has seen who had a
reaction to the Merial Purevax distemper vaccine. We'll be going back
to the older vaccination next year since she never had a problem with
it. She suffered through some vomiting and dry heaving.
Adric had a similar reaction to, believe it or not, a benadryl shot.
Our vet has NEVER seen that before. Adric reacted fairly strongly to
his rabies shot four years ago and we've pretreated with benadryl ever
since without incident. We postponed the rabies shot. To quote the
vet: "What will I give him if he reacts to the rabies shot?" The plan
is to try this again in a couple of weeks and see if he tolerates the
benadryl then.
My question: Does anyone have an alternative to benadryl for
pretreatment?
All the best,
Caity and the non-stop nine
