Thank you all so much for the helpful posts and excellent e-mails.
We found a fantastic vet (Eastern Exotics in Fairfax, Va.)using the search engine at sonic-weasel.org (thx for the link). She's got ferrets of her own, and really helped take the last of the edge off of things for us.
Gizmo is doing great, we're pretty sure it was just an upper respiratory infection, so we started amoxycillin, and we're getting rid of a few obvious things that might be causing an allergic reaction, or aggravating the bug. Also, we got his vaccinations up to date (for real this time).
I'm still a bit overwhelmed by all the data out there, but we
are now much more familiar with the vitals, and I only have to look over there... er, well, he was there just a second ago, I have only to go find him and look at him, to see that we're doing okay so far.
