A brief summary of what has happened to this 5-6yr old albino male ferret. One week ago this ferret had adrenal surgery based on prior symptoms as well as positive results of Tenn.Panel blood profile. Upon exploration the left adrenal was found slightly enlarged with the right very enlarged (approx 1/2 inch across) very tightly adhered to the post cava. Cryo was used on both glands two freeze thaw cycles to the left with 3 cycles on top of right and 2 on bottom of right. Due to close adherence to the post cava, dissection was not risked. The spleen was enlarged with remainder of abdomen appearing normal. Amoxi was given and continued post op 0.4 ml 2x. ( ferret wgt 1.2 kg).

Approx 3 1/2 hrs. later rear right foot was noted as swollen but the use of adhesive tape during surgery was thought to be the reason for the swelling. The next morning the ferret was returned to Dr. with very swollen foot and Drs tested blood oxygen saturation and found the right foot slightly low but both above 92% and diagnosed possible blood clot. Heparin was administered (amount not know by writer) and ferret was contained in small area to restrict movement. A second dose of heparin was administered that evening and ferret went home and restricted area was maintained. Small area was maintained for three days with no more heparin.

Dermatitis was noticed as well as discoloration. Ice packs were used for the first three days (approx 2x) with no sign of reduced swelling until the third day. On the third day topical ointment ( silver sulfadiazine cream) was started as well as warm hydrotherapy 3-4 times a day. Foot color seemed acceptable but swelling remained. A picture was taken 23 July PM. and I can send a copy to anyone interested. There is pain but ferret still uses foot in a normal fashion even to scratch ears. During this time no swelling was noted in the left foot nor in the front. Incision is healing nicely with ferret becoming more active daily. The foot is monitored for color and has been tested for blood O2 with the last reading being 96% in both feet.

At this point I am not sure what my question(s) are. I guess number one are we treating this problem correctly, (2) any other diagnoses, (3) has anyone experienced this post op problem. One factor I failed to mention was there was a pre op blood test performed showing only a slight anemia.

I will keep you posted as to any changes/outcome of this problem.

Thank you very much for any consideration and info.
