Others can tell you more, but you can look for him to try to pee
frequently with no output in the box, look for him to sit in the box
for much longer than normal with no output, or listen for him to whine
when he goes to the box. Just watch his body language when he goes.
Watch him now to get a feel for what he looks like normally when he's
peeing, and you will be able to tell later on if he's working harder
at it.

Yes, unfortunately, you're going to have to watch him and catch him in
the act. :-)
