What can a person do when a vet does not know ferrets?
That was a common problem years ago. Today there luckily are more consulting ferret vets, more vets to whom one can travel, more journal articles, multiple instructional videos, vet texts, classes, symposia, conferences, seminars, etc. so that vets can learn about ferrets.
In the links section at
http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/ferrethealth
and the critical refs one at
http://www.ferretcongress.org
there are multiple links to the pages of vets who also provide consultations for other vets.
Also, in the Reference Shelf at
http://www.smartgroups.com/vault/ferrethealth
and the crit. refs at
http://www.ferretcongress.org
you can find ways to locate ferret vets. In the second there are links to multiple listings, each different from the last.
There is no substitute for hands-on veterinary care, I'm afraid. Guidance can appear elsewhere, like here, but a vet still must be involved in a ferret's health issues.
BTW, have these ferrets had their vacciantions: the follow-up series of canine distemper vax needed in the first few weeks after the first one which hopefully happened at the breeder, then later their rabies vax, and then annual boosters?
I wanted to get this post in fast in case Smartgroups has any further problems which may lead to a crash because it sounds like at least two sets of people can use it immediately.
