We don't see a lot of ECEW these days,. because so many young ferrets were exposed to it as kits. The scenario can fit a lot of diseases, and as Sukie mentions - mucous does not necessarily indicate ECE.
I am sorry that you lost Possum. An autopsy would be a far more indicative way to identify the problem : fecal samples rarely do, and there is no available fecal test for ECE.
