I was reading a post on a rescue list I'm on here in Wisconsin and
thought everyone here would be interested to learn about the change in
the formulation of Kaopectate. Here's what was stated:

< From Veterinary medicine Bulletin #4544.1

Those of you who use Kaopectate to control diarrhea, especially in CATS,
need to be aware of the recent formula change.

Due to concerns regarding lead levels in the old formulation the
manufacturer of Kaopectate have changed the active ingredient to bismuth
subsalicylate.

Salicylates (e.g. aspirin, pepto bismol and now kaopectate) should only
be administered to cats under veterinary supervision. Some dogs are also
sensitive to salicylates. It is no longer safe to use Kaopectate for
dogs or for cats at home. >

I am assuming it shouldn't be used for ferrets either, unless under the
direction of a ferret knowledgeable veterinarian. The part about Pepto
Bismol worries me also, since there are quite a few ferret owners that
still use (on the advise of their vet) it in ulcer therapy.

Ferret hugs,

Kathy
