Hello everyone. I'll do my best not to get to long, please bear with me.=
It's been a while since I've needed help so here's a recap of my kids: I=
have 1 male, Goku (2yrs), and 2 females, Kira (2yrs) and Lou-Lou (1yr), al=
l fixed, all have current shots, perfectly healthy (as far as I can tell), =
and are very happy and spoiled. I wrote last about Goku being too aggressi=
ve with Lou-Lou when she first was brought into the family and through this=
group's help, we all determined it was just him showing who's the boss, et=
c. He is now very loving and tolerant of Lou-Lou like he is Kira, and Lou-=
Lou loves cuddling up with him at night and they all play very well togethe=
r. It's very obvious to anyone that sees them how much they all love each =
other. =
Yesterday, I was sitting at the table and heard little squeaks coming from =
the hanging cube and went to check, thinking it was Goku trying to get one =
of the girls out of the cube so he could sleep by himself. Sure enough, Ki=
ra was in there with him, and when they both saw me, they crawled out and o=
nto the shelf thinking I came to let them out. (I was about to let them ou=
t to play but had to get a few things done first so I could have all of my =
attention on them.) I told them to give me 5 more minutes and they'd be ou=
t for the rest of the night (like they always are). I turned to go back to=
the table, and no sooner had I sat down that I look over to see Kira looki=
ng at me at Goku stood next to her, grabbed her by the neck, got on her bac=
k, then started to scoot back with her, causing her to come out from under =
him as he dragged her to the corner. I jumped up and got him out of their =
big cage and put him in their smaller one so they could be apart before the=
y all got out to play. When they were let out 5 minutes later, it was like=
nothing happened and all were happily running throughout the apartment and=
through their tunnels. This only happens (that I see) every once in a whi=
le, very infrequent, and only lasts for about 3 seconds and then Kira whoop=
s him. In total, I've seen this 3 times.
So my question is this: Is Goku showing mating behavior?? Should I be conc=
erned, what should I do, should he be tested?? I had mentioned in a previo=
us post that due to where I am (Bowling Green, KY) there aren't many vets h=
ere that have dealt with ferrets, and mine only has basic knowledge but is =
willing to learn. I met a visiting vet from Glasgow that had a better unde=
rstanding of ferrets and have talked with him about getting the babies regu=
larly tested for ADV, etc.. and he said it seemed unnecessary to do that if=
they seemed fine, and I'm left thinking "Sure they seem fine, but isn't it=
better to detect things early to help treat instead of waiting for things =
to present themselves, sometimes too late??" =
So now I'm stuck. My vet has no idea about ferret diseases or aliments, an=
d when I asked him about getting Goku tested before when he acted this way,=
he said "sure, we'll take some blood and then try to figure out what to do=
from there", which worried me somewhat and was the reason I talked to the =
other vet. I'm trying to find a more experienced vet, and all have been ju=
st about the same here, but I am willing to drive to any distance for my ki=
ds.
I'm open to any thoughts, suggestions, or advice. Thank you all so much in=
advance for your help.
