Okay, I've got a whopper of a headache so be absolutely sure to check
me on this, but I think that there was a past poster in either Europe
or Australia, either on the FHL or the FML who said that with
prolonged heat (estrus) something like 60% of the females that
person knew about had fatal anemia but the others came through the
estrus okay.

I am NOT a breeder, but like Patty my impression was that estrus
needs to be prolonged to produce anemia, but then again there could
be genetic variations in how long it takes to turn on and even in how
many acquire that very dangerous complication for all that I know,
because breeding and whole animal complications are NOT something
with which I have experience.

I think it would be worth someone checking the two archives:
