I don't think it's been mentioned yet that ferrets can get mild
pneumonia very easily, too. With their active little sniffers,
they're always sucking up something or other, and especially if they
like playing in their water bowls, this sometimes leads to pneumonia.
This will not usually lay a ferret out the way it does a person or
another pet, so your vet may not consider it immediately. It can
cause the kind of coughing you describe though.

Mention it to your vet. This too will take an x-ray to diagnose, as
has already been recommended. Usually all it takes to clear it up is
a course of antibiotics.
