When I lived in Wisconsin I would take Phillip out to run through the culvert at the driveway and he often got a tiny tick or two. They were not the usual dog ticks or even deer ticks. An entomologist identified them as one particular to ground squirrels (chipmunks.) They were easily pulled off.
I've heard from medical people the best way to remove ticks is to gently pull them off with a tweezer. First aid departments also sell a little spoon thing with a slot in the front to get under the tick and lift it off.

Hope this helps.
