I'm not a vet and I hope one will chime in to correct me if I'm wrong, but I would think a mass in the chest and throat area in a ferret that has lost half his body weight presents more than the usual risk associated with surgery/anesthesia. Your vet is in the best position to judge whether or not the risk level is acceptable and it doesn't sound like he/she thinks it is.

On the other hand, if you do nothing, it doesn't sound like the prognosis is good, so taking that higher level of risk may be necessary if there's to be any hope of treatment.

I know it's a very difficult decision to make.
