I HAVE A 4YR OLD MALE FERRET DIAGNOSED WITH INSULINOMA AND DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY. HE HAS HAD INSULINOMA SURGERY JULY 3 AND HAS BEEN FINE UNTIL NOW. HIS GLUCOSE LEVELS HAVE STARTED TO DECLINE AGAIN. (AVG 80-85 MG/DL ON HOME GLUCOMETER).

CURRENT MEDICATIONS ARE: LASIX 4-5 MG BID, METILDIGOXIN 0.0125MG BID, IMIDAPRILHYDROCHLORIDE FOR 1.8KG BODY WEIGHT (THIS IS A GERMAN MEDICATION CALLED PRILIUM) AND PIMOBENDAN 0.625MG BID. HE IS ACTIVE FOR 20-30 MINUTES AT A TIME AND SEEMS TO BE ENJOYING HIMSELF.

HIS HEART AT THIS TIME SEEMS TO BE STABLE WITH THE MEDS PRESCRIBED. HOWEVER, BEFORE HIS INSULINOMA SURGERY, HE WAS TAKING PREDNISOLONE 0.25MG BID TO STABILIZE HIS GLUCOSE. WHEN ON PRED, HE BECAME DEPRESSED- LIKE AND WAS NOT INTERESTED IN PLAYING. I AM UP FOR TRYING IT AGAIN WHEN HIS LEVELS DROP TO A CRITICAL VALUE (NOW THE AVG AT AT 6HR FAST IS AROUND 80-85 MG/DL.) HOWEVER, IF HE BECOMES LESS ACTIVE AGAIN, I HAVE A PRESCRIPTION FOR PROGLYCEM, BUT AS I UNDERSTAND IT, I WOULD HAVE TO STOP THE DIGOXIN.

MY QUESTION IS, IS IT BETTER TO USE THE PRED WITH A NOT SO HAPPY PLAYFUL FERRET, OR TRY THE PROGLYCEM AND TAKE THE RISK WITH HIS HEART MEDS?

I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY INSIGHT OR COMMENTS ON THIS. HIS CARDIOLOGIST IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH PROGLYCEM AND ITS EFFECTS ON HIS HEART MEDS OTHER THAN DIGOXIN.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!
