Infection can reduce blood glucose levels, especially combined with the lower carbohydrate food needed right now. Giving Nutrical till the infection is past for a while makes sense because then a later reading will be more accurate. Also, you really would not want to give steroids to an animal who is fighting an infection if that can be avoided.

I'm not a vet, but what your vet said in relation to the sugars makes sense to me from what we've experienced over the last 21 years with ferrets.

Of course, it is possible that insulinoma is present (also or instead) so after the infection is past the blood will need to be run again to know.
