Have you tried the prescription liquid prep of Carafate instead of using the caplets with water? Very little of the new liquid prep is needed and we've found that it has a high rate of acceptability among the ferrets. Any pharmacy will carry it. Our's was not expensive and is marked with long shelf life date.
