Laura, when Oscar had diabetes, I gave him the Chicken Gravy you hear mentioned a lot on ferret lists. He did well with it.
I do not use any additional fats, except for the small amount of olive oil, called for in the recipe.
Oscar did very well with this. Once we got the ketones under control (gone), and his bg came down a bit, he started eating kibble again. His bg spiked and we had to adjust his insulin again. He eventually was able to do ok without the insulin, and did go back to an exclusive kibble diet for a number of months before he needed Pred again.
You can find instructions for making Bob Church's Chicken Gravy on the web. I have found a butcher shop that will grind the chicken for me, so I bypass the hardest part.
