True darkness means darkness as complete as you can get it -- not night lights, none of those equiptment lights (especially the green ones since green and blue light have been found to be especially goodat reducing or stopping the body's natural production of melatonin.

We use black curtains, black covering over the cage where they are at night, and bedding in the cage. Sometimes they also go into the cage to relax when Steve and I arne't sleeping, but we also provide bedding under our platform bed, on the far side of a closet which isopen just a bit on the other side, and under some furniture.

The body produces melatonin on its own only during darkness. Even small amounts of light greatly reduce the production and larger amounts shut that production off.
