I am praying this gets out before the down time, so am
going to write it up as quickly as possible.
I posted a couple weeks about Sniffles my 2 1/2 year
old ferret who was extremely anemic.
Since then he has had another transfusion and I just
got the results from his bone marrow test.
An initial slide of blood showed that he did not have
auto immune disease because of the absence of red
cells.
Here is the results of the bone marrow:
400 cell differential yielded:
1% erythroid (rubriblasts)
56% myeloid
41% lymphocytes
2% plasma cells
Microscopic findings:1)bone marrow increased ME
ration, marrow lymphocytosis. 2)apparent absense of
erythroid cells.
Comment:No organisms noted. Suggestive of erythroid
hyperplasia/aplasia.
Some differentials may include: estrogen toxicity from
adrenal tumor, drug toxicity, aplastic anemia,
myleofibrosis, marrow necrosis, ideopathic primary
bone marrow disease.
end report
My vet believes it is ideopathic bone marrow disease
that he has had from birth because (believe it or not)
he is still walking around, eating and acting like a
ferret even with this low red cell count which means
he probably has been anemic a very long time.
Personally I am arguing for adrenal disease despite
his young age and not alot of signs. The two things
being considered are a bone marrow transplant and
adrenal surgery.
My vet believes Dr Kemmerer in Fl has done a bone
marrow transplant, so if anyone knows how to contact
her I would be very grateful.
Any suggestions, especially from the experienced vets,
would be very helpful.
