In the eighties, we had a young fella... oh he was less than a year old I
think. His name was Slink. Big pretty silver mitt. He had sudden weight
gain. And he acted like he never had enough food. Stools were normal and there
was nothing unusual about his behavior at all. One day when my husband was
drying him after a bath..... he hemoraged. Blood was pouring out his anus all
over the place. It was horrible. My husband jumped into the car to the
emergency animal hospital. They were dumbfouded, and by then the ferret was dying.
They did not know anything about ferrets back then, and told my husband it
was probably best to euthanize him as they had no clue where to begin for tests
or how to properly treat the animal. We did not know about necropsies back
then, etc. So he didn't have one.
It's something that has haunted us. Something we'll always wonder about.
What happened to Slink? Very strange. And even now when I know so much
more about ferret health, I"m clueless as to what could have happened to him.
Does this draw a blank with all of you, or do you have any ideas to kick around
about this? I just don't want it ever to happen again, as it was pretty
horrific.
