I talked to my vet on the phone yesterday about my Sugar's red and inflamme=
d penis. I was thinking urine burn from getting wet when pottying due to l=
arge abdomen attributable to a too-tasty love of Chicken Gravy. =

Vet says while urine burn is possible, so is trauma. A ferret penis has a =
bone in it with a hook on the end of it. The bone can get caught on someth=
ing and cause trauma to the penis. Can be a serious problem. It can be ch=
ecked by pulling back the penis foreskin to look, but that is done under li=
ght sedation as the ferret doesn't think much of the procedure. Since Suga=
r's penis is just red and only slightly inflammed (less than a dime was the=
vet's criteria), maybe 1/4 inch long and 1/8 wide, and no skin around peni=
s was involved, Vet said to keep gently clean it with plain soap and water =
several times a day. Do not put any cream on it, as he'll lick it off. If=
penis is not better by Monday, bring Sugar in for office visit; if it gets=
worse Thursday or Friday, bring him in then. =

I thought this info might help someone else in the future. As for his itch=
ing, the first thing he asked about was fleas, of course. Next, he said gi=
ve him an oatmeal bath and see how he does. =

I love my vet,
