Dear ferret health group, I have a three year old male that I adopted a
year ago from a shelter. He seemed to be in perfect health at the time, and
continued that way until this summer. I did an internship in another state
and had to leave him with my mother (who has a ferret of her own) for almost
two months---when I got home he suddenly seemed to be more "clumsy" than
before---apparent hind leg weakness (although weakness does not seem like
quite the right word as he will push against my fingers with his hind legs
just as hard as before)----other than some excess stumbling he seems to
still be in good health---he has a wonderful appetite, no problems going to
the bathroom (normal urine and stool output), he plays, and shows no signs
of discomfort. I was worried that it might be lyphosarcoma (my mother had a
ferret die of this about four years ago and we went the medical route with
chemo and steroids to no avail) and as a result I have been giving him a
tincture of essiac in organic banana babyfood three times a day for about a
month and a half now---he has not shown any more progressive symptoms, but
also has not visibly improved. I do not want to just bring him to the vet
because I am reluctant to put him through stressful/painful tests just to
find out that it is something that we cannot cure....so I have been trying
to take a more natural approach. But I am worried about him and I do want
to care for him in the best possible way. I would greatly appreciate any
insight that you might be able to give me. Thank you so much for your time
and any advice you could possibly offer.
Love and light
Colleen
