That's an excellent question. I'm not a vet but I do have some experience
with this. B'Elanna, our little two 1/2 year old, was born in the
spring. That fall, when she was only about 6 months old, she began to get,
well, positively *rotund*. We were really worried, so much so that we even
checked for a thyroid problem, but she was fine otherwise. When spring
came, to our surprise, she suddenly shed all the excess weight, and we
again worried that she was sick, but no, she was fine. We didn't make the
seasonal connection until last fall, when she again blimped out to almost 3
lbs. Then this spring it was gone again and she was down to exactly
2. Now she's getting *ahem* padding again. :-) So our vet and we just
figured she is on the rather excessive end of the seasonal weight thing.

I'm not sure that's what's going on with your boy, but just to let you
know, it can happen to excess.
