The 2004 issue of "Ferrets USA" just arrived and it includes an article by Dr. Sandra Kudrak. In the section on dysuria she also mentions hematuria (bleeding when urinating), that males have a greater risk of plugging than females who have a wider urethra (and also don't have a prostate which developes problems secondary to adrenal disease) and that males are therefore more likley to require emergency vet appointments in such a such a situation, and that causes of dysuria can include urinary tract infections, bladder plugs and stones, and kidney infections.
(BTW, in another article in there which is partly about toys: when ferrets get small cups here they are paper ones and have holes punched in the bottom, the pastic cups with which they play are our drinking glasses and are way too wide to get stuck on heads.)
