I also live in the UK, and my vet is an 'exotic animal' vet (knows her stuff about ferrets). They advised me to use the Frontline spray for cats on my ferrets.
They only need a few pumps, and because I keep my cats well protected with it, I only bother to spray the ferrets once or twice a year (usually as we are entering the summer season)
Do check this out with your vet however, but i've been using it for over four years now, and never had any problems.
