I remember it has something to do with the oil producing glands and when my
one ferret had it he ended up being adrenal. Not that only adrenal disease can
cause it, but just something to keep in the back of your mind, especially since
you mention the stronger smell and more oil which is what typically is seen
when an intact male ferret goes into rut.

these flecks can be scratched off without much pressure from your finger. they
seem to stem from his ears and then spread down his body. he seems to have
somewhat oily fur, and a stronger smell then my other ferret.
