I am hoping that your Smokey does not have the same illness which my Beeker=
had...There is no way of knowing this, of course, from what you say...But =
if you look at the old posts of "mystery disease" you may get an idea...At =
this date, I do believe, that NO healthy ferret with a properly functioning=
immune system should die of an opportunistic bacterial infection, such as =
the MDR pseudomas infection with caused sepsis in Beeker...Opportunistic in=
fection is the key...The point is: my ferret did NOT have any preexisting p=
eritonitis (had surgery one and one half weeks before I euthanized him)nor =
any condition KNOWN to ferret health experts that would have been a precuso=
r to his suseptibility to massive infection...The only thing I can come up =
with is that he must have had some genetic/viral immune disorder which allo=
wed this bacteria and others to thrive...IF ferrets are somewhat like PEOPL=
E MDR pseudonmas (for instance) only affects the immune impaired--cystic fi=
brosis patients, cancer patients, transplant recipients, AIDS patients, etc=
...ie, "healthy" people/ferrets simply are not overcome by this bacteria no=
r others we know of which we are exposed to all the time...
I'm NOT a vet, do not mean to give advice, just my humble free opinion, for=
what it is worth...Am hoping for a good outcome for Smokey. I'm sorry he i=
s ill.
Kathy
