My 5 1/2 year old ferret has rapidly lost weight. He also has very black wet stools - however not diarreah. He is not eating as ususal, and has a "rotten" odor around his mouth. I took him to the vet 3 weeks ago because he was not walking straight. It only happened once, but having had and lost 10 other ferrets, it was a dreaded sign. She could find nothing wrong, but didn't do any blood work. She felt no growths or enlarged organs. I felt at that time that he had lost a bit of weight. This recent problem has dramaticaly evolved in the last 24 hours. I'm thinking it might be an ulcer, but was wondering if anyone had ideas on the foul smell from his mouth. I will be taking him to the vet in the AM.
Thanks in advance for any ideas that you may have,

Regards,
Becky
