It is unlikely you have two whole ferrets. A male would be obvious,
they get oily, very distinct odor, and have testicles that drop down and
are very hard
to miss.
Plus the male would have been mounting
the female at some point when you were in the room to observe them, even
trying to
mount other things, and "sliming" things when he is in rut.

The females also get oily, smell increases to them and their vulva will
swell before
they can even be bred. The swelling is quite large and hard to miss, it
will be right in front of their anus and sometimes has a little discharge
from it.
This swelling starts to go down after the mating.

Now, a female can have this same swelling and not be in heat, but have
adrenal
disease.

As far as putting on weight, it can be the winter weight some ferrets
gain,
but can also be fluid or from a tumor, etc. My suggestion, is to bring
them both to the vet for check ups and to confirm that they are in fact
fixed.
