In addition to the possibilities already mentioned anything which can cause abdominal ascites needs to be considered among possible medical causes when there is a suden wieght gain which can't be explained by fat gain or other known cause.
It really sounds like vet appointment is needed if it isn't possible to tell what is going on to make sure nothing serious is happening, and to treat with appropriate measures if something is.
