Don't try so hard at monitoring the blood glucoses, stress causes the
glucose to elevate by itself. If you want to monitor it is great just not
so often. You could also use urine testing to help monitor. The goal is to
manage the clinical signs and keep them from getting the ketones in their
syatem, not to have a perfect blood sugar level, but a ferret (or which ever
animal you own) to have good quality in his life. Diet is improtant and
there are 2 views out there, either low fat high fiber or low carbs with
good quality protein. Also if you have trouble regulating then you need to
adjust the feeding schedule, a set amount of food at specific times each
day, free choice feedings can trhow you curve balls. Also you want a curve
where you are not spiking really high then low because this is hard on the
body. I agree you probably need more insulin. I have only worked with one
ferret with diabetes he was insulinomic forever then went diabetic. I did
not treat him immediately I weaned him off the pred and waited to see what
he did. When I did treat him I used diluted Ultralente it has a longer
action then NPH which could also contribute to your problem, the ferret
metabolism is pretty high so I would imagine it works out of his system
quicker. I started on 1/2 unit of insulin then up slowly to 2-3 units and
eventually back off. The ferret ended up dying from an tumor in the capsule
of the kidney. I would like to see you watch him and see how he is acting
and modifying his diet a bit. Discuss the options with your vet. I think
for a ferret a low carb higher protein diet is the way to go. I haven't
treated many ferrets but I wourk a lot off of how I treat others and how
each system varies. I hope this helps a little and I am sure there may be
other opinions, some may disagree too, but this is the approach I really
like. Good Luck and I really hope this helps some.

said hes seen ferrets do it before so she is just odd:0.

[Moderator's note: Please, remember the rules and do not mention veterinary
physicians or hospitals by name when discussing treatments.

Also, Anna, please, say what meds are being given and the mg, milligram,
levels rather than the ml or cc volumes which tell nothing about the dose level.

The rules, which can be found at
http://www.smartgroups.com/vault/ferrethealth/fhl_rules.txt ,
are few in number and easily followed.]
