First off, YES, it is important to find out if the ferret is reacting to chicken. In fact, it is important to find out if the ferret is reacting to any of the foods. We had one who reacted as badly to turkey as he did to chicken (so he had very special foods and we used baby food as an affordable test -- finding that he was fine with lamb and beef ones and probably would have been with pork but Steve used to know a pet pig so we don't buy that), and if you read up on a member's ferret, Rinky Dink, in the complete archives at
http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org
you will notice that in his case he didn't tolerate any baby foods except ham.

If he has a problem with a given food then continuing to feed it could just worsen his problems over time because of increasing inflammation.

Ask your vet about trying Depo-Medrol shots or Imuran if Prednisolone can't be used.
