I used wood pellets of both the hard and softwood variety in the past without a problem. My 2 complaints with them were that I did not find them especially absorbant, and therefore not very good at odor control; and I found them to be tough on the ferrets feet, especially the little guys.

I have used Feline and now All Pet Pine for at least 5 years now which are similar to the wood pellets, but a better shape and more absorbant. They are used in my ferret room and in open cages so there is not a problem with the fumes from the pine. (It could be a problem if the ferrets were forced to live with it as a bedding material, or in an enclosed space like a glass tank.) If any of them have ingested it there has never been a problem, and frankly, it makes living with 19 ferrets in an apartment possible because of its great absorbancy and odor control.
