Got a question and need some advise. I have a young hob(5 months), Gimli,
that has a luxated hip on the left side. My vet would like to
know if anyone has ever done a FHO on a ferret vs. amputation. If so, what
success have you had? Possible plus and minus of doing FHO or amputation? He
has done an FHO on a dog before but never a ferret.

The leg/hip has been out for quite a while and appears to be injury related.
The muscle has atrophied so stretching and returning the leg into the socket
is not an option. A chiropracter has done some stretching and electrode
stimulation. An xray was done to confirm that it was not broken.

Gimli does drag the leg behind him but can use it some on carpeting so he
gets around pretty good. He does not seem to be in a lot of pain and will let
you handle the leg. But it must be causing some pain. He is able to get in
and out of the litterbox but not too good at wiping himself. So there is the
sanitary concerns.

Any feedback, suggestions or information you can give would be appreciated.
Gimli's a real sweetie and I'd like to do what is best for him.

Thanks,
