I know what you mean. Most things speak praises or rumored uses, or both but few talk about cautions, dangerouns interactions (with meds, alternative meds, other supplements, etc), what conditions make use more dangerous, which herbs can do things like crash blood glucose levels, etc. You know, the sorts of things labels on standard meds warn everyone about.
There are some posts on specific things to worry about in both the FHL archives at
http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org
and the FML archives at
http://listserv.cuny.edu/archives/ferret-search.html
Look especially for posts from Mary Conley in the FML archives and there may be some in the FHL arcives, too (also see the MA listing in
http://www.smartgroups.com/vault/ferrethealth/ReferenceShelf/comp_pharm.html )
Some others who have posted in the FML on the topic of specific cautions include Karen Purcell, DVM. I think that Bob Church did on the FML. I know that I have in both locations, working from texts here.
Sometimes generalizing from effects on other animals is done. For example, licorice root has some strong cautions for mammals in general. The best references I have for that sort of info are the _PDR for Herbal Medications_ and the the _PDR for Supplements_, but there are some fine Varro Tyler books ohter there, too, as well as some others. In one of Mary's FML posts I recall her talking about references in relation to members of Carnivora but was not able to add them to my reference pile so don't know what they were, but you should find the info in the FML archives.
