Our cat died under isoflurane during a dental cleaning and extraction. He was 19 years old so we knew there was probably considerable risk, but we had no choice because he had some teeth that were so bad he couldn't even eat. However, we felt we did everything possible in advance to insure it was safe to do this. ECG, full x-rays, complete blood chemistry, etc., etc. Still, he stopped breathing during the procedure.
We also had Spaz (ferret) lose partial use of his hind legs following a routine dental cleaning while under iso. We're not sure what happened. Full body x-rays, particularly of the spinal region, reveals nothing. We tried physical therapy and even accupuncture, but it's been well over a year and there has never been any improvement.
I've also had a least a hundred, maybe more, procedures done on both ferrets and cats under isoflurane and never had a problem before these two. And some were deathly ill. Was it the isoflurane in these two cases? I doubt it. There are just too many variables to know exactly what happened in each case.
