What you are describing sounds like roaning.
I think it can occur at any age. I have
7 year old ferrets without it, but have had
young ferrets with this feature.
I think there is no great way to age a ferret,
but the teeth color should be solid white at less
than a year old. Any clearing of the enamel
( usually the canines are the easiest to see )
would mean a slightly older ferret.

-- We are now entering summer in Australia and Fezzo has shed his winter coat
and is growing his new summer suit. His new summer suit includes something
different this summer though - lots of stiff grey hairs mingled in with his usual
sable coat at the base of his hind legs.
Can anyone advise the significance of this? Is he actually a much older ferret or
can this hair colouration occur at any age?
