They are not unusual in older ferrets, and the usual way to deal with them is to remove them unless the ferret is not a surgical candidate. If you look up megasplenaly in places like

you'll find a number of things to help you understand it
At times, of course, the spleen might have something more serious going on, but usually they come out (then pathology is done, of course, to be safe) and the ferrets go on to live very comfortable lives. In fact, not carrying around all that extra weight sometimes means having to prevent the ferrets from being too active for a week or two after surgery because they feel so much lighter.
