Subject: Prostate/adrenal questions - finasteride, Lupron, Casodex, melatonin

Hello all,

I was curious as to whether finasteride will reduce prostate inflammation
when given alone or if it always has to be used in conjunction with Lupron. How
about melatonin? Any effect on enlarged prostates?

Also, what about the combination of finasteride and Casodex if Lupron is not
available?

Lastly, would there be any benefit to using the maintenance dose of
finasteride as a precautionary measure in older males to possibly prevent prostate
troubles? What about using melatonin, Lupron, pulse-therapy dosing of Casodex, or
others as possible adrenal 'preventatives'?

We are averaging around a 55-60% adrenal rate in our ferrets (10 out of 16,
or actually 8 out of 14 since two cases were preexisting when adopted) and a
50% rate of adrenal tumors in our dogs (2 out of 4) over the last five years.
Just seems like there should be something we can do other than just wait for
it to happen.....and around here, it doesn't seem to be a question of if it
will happen but rather one of when. It's only a matter of time it seems,
especially since of the 6 who have not had adrenal, 4 are still under two years of
age and still a little young for onset (the other two died from lymphoma at less
than four years of age)- when you take the youngsters out of the equation due
to their young age, we actually have about an 80% adrenal rate in our
ferrets.....that's scary! My vet is actually just waiting for the day when I show up
and tell him that I've been diagnosed with adrenal as well.

Thanks!
