Wow, we're going through it at our house. First my husband had the flu, th=
en my son. I had no idea ferrets could catch the flu from people so easily=
, but they have, all five, but 1 or 2 at a time. So when 1 or 2 are gettin=
g well, 1 or 2 more crop up sick. I had 3 in quarantine in 3 different roo=
ms in my house. I took the first one to get it to the vet, who diagnosed i=
t and just said keep her hydrated with 5 cc of water (I think) every couple=
of hours and he gave me amoxycillin for secondary bacterial infection, whi=
ch I mixed with Ferretone. Also, I discovered that it's much easier to get=
water down the ferret by mixing it with 'Tone and maybe a little Petromalt=
(kind of trick them). I even would stick my feet or hands under water and=
let them lick the water off, since that was about the only way they'd take=
in water while sick. They've all eaten, but don't want water at all, which=
is definitely not usual. They have a couple of degrees of fever and are v=
ery lethargic and make these horrible ....snarfling? sounds, like wet cough=
s and sneezes and wet snorts. It's hard to describe. Just wanted to give =
everyone a heads up who's not aware (as I was not) that if anyone in your h=
ouse has the flu, keep your ferrets away. It's very, very contagious.
