I don=92t like to second guess my vet, that being said I have a question ab=
out the treatment one of my ferrets is receiving. His treatment is not what=
I have heard is commonly done for ferrets with his type of problems. One o=
f our ferrets has insulinoma he underwent surgery for it about 5 mo ago. He=
did very well for about 3 mo. Then his symptoms returned. The vet thinks =
it is just ambient (I think that is the word he used) tissue causing the pr=
oblem and wants us to give him glucose instead. I have never heard of using=
glucose to maintain BG levels, except in an emergency. He sent us home wit=
h a very large bottle of glucose and asked me to give him a small syringe f=
ull every morning when he gets up. I would like to point out that his sympt=
oms have stopped but I feel uncomfortable with they why they have stopped. =
I thought the common practice for a ferret with insulinoma is to use pred.=
Can someone explain what pred does for a ferrets system? Maybe I just don=92=
t understand. The vet we have has been really great to us he has done all =
our ferret care. Three adrenal removals (both sides) knee surgery for one t=
hat tore his knee up. Cleaned teeth removed skin tumors for two others tre=
ated them all for ear mites, ect.... I think he is a good vet I just don=92=
t understand the course of treatment. When I asked about the pred he told =
me it lowered BG and Koda=92s problem was he had too low BG (58) and we nee=
ded to keep it higher and pred would do the opposite of what we wanted. But=
all I ever read about is that people use pred to control symptoms of insul=
inoma any information on what pred does would be helpful
Thank you
Jen
