Sukie gave good advice reguarding using a rice pad or a gel pad. To
answer your other question, it helps keep their boby temp up. For some
reason, a ferret can't control it's body temp when it is under the
influence of anesthesia. Vets use a water pad with a thermostat to
control the temp of the water that is circulated thru it. Also, keep a
close eye on their state of hydration.
