"How was the dextrose being given sub Q, because at normal amounts it causes
skin damage and sloughing?"

The normal amount yes, but I have always been taught that 2.5% or less of
dextrose can be given subcutaneously when absolutely necessary (as in the case of
a severely dehydrated ferret to whom it would be difficult if not impossible
to give intravenous fluids). My ferrets' veterinarian has given very dilute
dex SQ after many venipuncture attempts. If sending the ferret home and the
only alternative is intraperitoneal fluids, they may not have a choice.
